HAMARTIA
2019
cast bronze, ceramic earthenware, wood ash
Hamartia is a term in Greek tragedy that refers to the personal flaws that ultimately cause the hero's downfall. Funerary masks, such as the Mycenaean Mask of Agamemnon, are worn by the dead to represent their likeness and preserve their legacy while the face decays behind it.
These contemporary masks and their accompanying tiles, based on the “Linear B” artifacts (also of the Mycenae), function as self-portraits of the flaws that can mar a potential legacy.
